SUNPLAY EXPANDS MARINE CONSERVATION EFFORTS TO INCLUDE SEA TURTLE PROTECTION IN SEMPORNA
Sunplay ‘Sending Love
& Care to the Ocean’ CSR Initiatives Include
Coral Reef
Rehabilitation and Turtle Conservation Efforts
Sunplay,
a leading sunscreen brand under Rohto-Mentholatum (M) Sdn. Bhd., is reinforcing
its commitment to protecting Malaysia’s marine ecosystems through the sixth
year of its Sending Love & Care to the Ocean Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
This year, the initiative has expanded beyond coral reef rehabilitation
to include sea turtle conservation in Pulau Pom Pom, Semporna—one of Malaysia’s
richest marine biodiversity areas. The expanded programme supports both marine
habitat restoration and the protection of vulnerable marine species.
As part of the coral reef restoration programme, two large-scale 3D
artificial reef structures will be constructed and deployed on degraded reef
slopes that have been severely affected by prolonged blast-fishing activities.
The structures will provide artificial habitats for marine life and a
stable foundation for the transplantation of 480 new coral fragments. This
effort is intended to support marine biodiversity and accelerate reef recovery
in damaged areas.
In parallel, Sunplay is supporting a 3-month Turtle Hatchery and Nest
Protection Programme during the peak nesting season from June to August. Under
the programme, 50 vulnerable nests belonging to Green Turtles and critically
endangered Hawksbill Turtles will be identified and carefully relocated to
protected hatchery environments to improve the hatchlings’ chances of survival.
The programme is expected to support the safe hatching and release of
approximately 3,750 turtle hatchlings into the ocean, contributing to the
long-term conservation of these threatened species.
Coral reefs continue to face mounting threats from climate change,
pollution and unsustainable fishing practices, placing increasing pressure on
marine ecosystems worldwide. The decline of coral reefs has serious
implications for marine biodiversity, coastal protection, food security and the
survival of species—including sea turtles—that depend on healthy marine
habitats.
By supporting both coral reef restoration and sea turtle conservation,
Sunplay is taking a more holistic approach to protecting and restoring marine
ecosystems.
“At Sunplay, we take our responsibility to protect the ocean seriously,
particularly as environmental pressures continue to intensify. Ocean health is
deeply interconnected. The continued decline of coral reefs not only weakens
marine biodiversity but also disrupts the balance of the wider ecosystem on
which species such as sea turtles depend,” said Lim Mei Yuen, General Manager
of Rohto-Mentholatum (M) Sdn. Bhd.
“This is why we are expanding our efforts beyond coral reef restoration
to include sea turtle conservation in Semporna. Through this broader approach,
we hope to contribute towards a healthier and more resilient marine environment
for future generations.”
“Together with TRACC’s scientific expertise and proven conservation work
on the ground, we remain committed to strengthening this partnership and
creating a greater, long-term impact on marine conservation,” Lim added.
The initiative is supported by a consumer-driven fundraising campaign. A
portion of the proceeds from selected Sunplay products sold at Watsons Malaysia
during the campaign period will be channelled towards Sunplay’s marine
conservation projects in Semporna.
The campaign also supports the objectives of the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, further reinforcing
Sunplay’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and marine
ecosystem conservation.
