World Saree Day Malaysia gave proceeds as a donation to PSDM to help obtain additional equipment, vocational career training expenses, and tools in order to help the members of the association to become independent and successful entrepreneurs in the near future.

In this modern era, specifically, the Indian culture of Saree among Malaysians is increasingly being forgotten and is often modernised. As Malaysia is a multicultural country with many different ethnic groups and cultures that have existed for many centuries, WSDM aims to bring a social impact to the community by giving exposure through the awareness of this event in hopes to encourage the young generations to continue to love and appreciate the art and culture of various races in Malaysia.

Introductory presentation on saree from Bharat Club

Over 60 Sarees of various materials, textiles, and draping styles were showcased in a fashion show with the participation of 10 experienced models from PDSM, this has indirectly given the opportunity for people with Down syndrome to enhance their self-development. A unique traditional Khatak dance performed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (NSCBICC) was also presented where the dancers narrate stories through their eyes and expressions.

Besides that, there are many different types of Sarees with a variety of materials, designs, and draping styles, which are worn to suit different occasions across India. Bharat club Kuala Lumpur showcased 30 different Saree materials and draping styles from 30 states (south to north India) as a way to educate people on the uniqueness and interesting facts about Sarees.

“We choose to educate about the cultural heritage of Saree because there are many interesting facts to it, one of which being there are different varieties of Sarees, materials, and textiles across India, and there are various ways of draping the saree. It has been recorded that there are a total of 108 ways of wearing a Saree which makes it unique.” said Bkay Nair, Director of World Saree Day.
