DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA (PSDM) CHARITY HI-TEA WITH WORLD SAREE DAY MALAYSIA (WSDM)

Down Syndrome Association of Malaysia (PSDM) has come together with World Saree Day Malaysia (WSDM) in an art and cultural charity event supported by the National Arts and Culture Department (JKKN) and the High Commission of India. This event aims to generate funds for PSDM and at the same time educating about the uniqueness of Saree as well as to introduce the culture of wearing Saree in Malaysia.

Looking gorgeous, ladies

PSDM is a non-profit organisation, that established in 2001, has a charitable volunteer that takes care of the development and fights for the rights of individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) for the whole of Malaysia through the perspective of health, welfare, education, vocational career training, and employment.

In PSDM, Down Syndrome kids are exposed to various skills such as baking, cleaning their room, washing clothes, and other various skills to help them in their daily life. Therefore, the funds generated will be used to help PSDM to obtain additional equipment, vocational career training expenses, and tools in order to help the members of the association to become independent and successful entrepreneurs in the near future.

Increasing numbers of people with Down syndrome are rolling up their sleeves and getting employed and to work on their own businesses. WSDM and BNR is proud to support and encourage entrepreneurs with Down syndrome.

The gorgeous BK Nair

Bkay Nair, the Organising Chairlady of the event, is the Director of Bkay Nair Resources (BNR), a training provider and event company that has personally trained many in becoming successful entrepreneurs, well-equipped in communication and career development.

A philanthropist at heart, she has involved herself in many events and programme doing social service for women and children in need through Soroptimist International Ampang and World Hijab Day International which is what inspired Bkay to initiate this current charity event.

The multi-talented BK Nair

Bkay Nair has previously organised and co-organised multiple events in the past such as “Miss Saree Malaysia 2019”, “Miss Saree Malaysia 2021”, “Women of Essence Leadership Series 2019 - 2021”, and Entrepreneurship Branding Camp 2020 and etc.

“As someone who is passionate about the cultural heritage of Malaysia and has taken part in many charity events, I hope that this event can give an opportunity for PSDM communities to show their capabilities and potential while giving others the chance to learn more about our traditional clothes,” said Bkay Nair.

In this modern era, specifically, the Indian culture of Saree among Malaysians is increasingly being forgotten and is often modernised. As Malaysia is a multicultural country with many different ethnic groups and cultures that have existed for many centuries, WSDM aims to bring a social impact towards the community by encouraging the young generations to continue to love and appreciate the art and culture of various races in Malaysia.

This event is a merge between charity, education, culture, and fashion. With international women’s day coming up, this gives us a platform to celebrate women of all races, and backgrounds. WSDM strives to preserve the diverse cultures of the many races in Malaysia, as well as to encourage people of the public to wear their respective traditional clothes to forge unity among the various races while cultivating the spirit of love and respect for traditional dances among the current generation so that it is not forgotten.

The upcoming WSDM will take place on 19 March 2023 at Dewan Tun Abdul Razak, Menara Kembar Bank Rakyat, Kuala Lumpur, where performances from PSDM, JKKN, Bharat Club Kuala Lumpur, and many others will be presented.

Guests of Honour and VVIP guest includes the Minister of Human Resources, Tuan V. Sivakumar, Deputy Minister of Tourism, YB Khairul Firdaus, H.E of High Commissioner of India, Mr. Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy, and YB Senator Datuk Ras Adiba.
