Fulfilling My Ultimate Mermaid Dream

I have always loved everything and anything mermaid up till the point I even started this page Mermaid Unicorn Works to share beautiful mermaid & unicorn related posts. This creature is indeed captivating. And so, I became a mermaid today!

My mermaiding dream just came true today. All thanks to Mermaid Lee Wei Lin of Swimin12.com

Being a mermaid ain't easy I tell you. Admiring all the beautiful mermaid pics on instagram your would have thought it's easy to just slip into the mermaid suit and pose. Well let me share with you. I am super appreciative of the education I had on mermaiding today with Mermaid Sifu Lee Wei Lin. Rule number one. Before we get to swim in the pool, I was taught on how to wear the fin properly and also some safety measures on how to control my balance in deep (well not so deep) water.

I have always thought I just buy the mermaid tail at Shoppee/Taobao/Lazada and just slip it in. Well I was soooooo wrong! First, we need to get the tail fin made of rubber to fit into the inner mermaid tail. That's where we get the beautiful shape at the end of the tail. Even that, Wei Lin had gone through the trouble of explaining to me what is a good quality fin and what is not. I even tried swimming in both types of fins. The skeletal rubber fins that costs RM400 plus vs the simple slip in type which costs RM70. I do feel a difference once swimming in the waters.

This is made of rubber, the RM400+ type.

In mermaid school they will first teach you how to wear this and swim with this first (minus the mermaid suit) Once you are familiar with the weight and flow only will you wear the full mermaid gear.

This bottom is is made of plastic.
Not highly recommended. The rubber type above is a better material.

This other type is the RM70 kind of quality and it's lighter weight on land but when you swim in these, it's very floaty and you won't be able to swim as swiftly and balancing would be another issue.

Another gear when you dive in to the pool is this. It's very different from googles. Notice you nose area is covered here. You pretty much have to breathe from your mouth. This is to prevent water from coming in to your nose as you flip and do your mermaid twist in the pool.
I like it!

Before jumping into the pool or taking beautiful mermaid shots, I studied how to wear the mermaid tail properly. There are zippers by the side to enable the skeletal rubber fins to be fitted in first before sliding in our legs. Slide in your legs to wear the fins like how you wear your shoes. Gently pull the tail up like as if you are wearing pants but do not overstretch the ankle part. Then zip it up.

Now, handling the tail will take some effort as you slide into the pool. Next I learnt how to stand with the mermaid tail.

On land earlier, my Mermaid teacher taught me how to glide and swim like a fish in water with an "S" style. Once I jumped into the water I tried to execute her teachings but I failed as I was wiggling all over. She said fish have no knees. So don't bend your knees. After her words of wisdom, I manage to grasp what she was trying to tell me and thus began my mermaid swimming adventure. Wohoo! I was super eggcited.

Now comes another part as I swim, I gotta know how to twist and turn and land on my feet (errrr..mermaid tail) as it will require some balancing. Watch the video on how I did it.

So, you see, being a swimming mermaid ain't easy.
The easiest part is posing for lovely shots in shallow waters. That I can do. Let's feast your eyes on some of these beautiful shots and living my mermaid dream.

Ahhhhhhh.......this is life!

Let's admire all the beautiful mermaid tail together.
Here are some of my sifu's collection.
This is one of my favourite. Doesn't this remind you of a Fighting Fish.
Compare and see for yourselves! Look at the beautiful flowy tail!

Next is this flamboyant piece. However this is not a practical piece in water as the strings below will add weight and pull you down. This is just a showcase piece.

I kinda liked this rainbow piece. This is the cheap type and it's a kid's size. For those who wanna play for fun and take pics I guess this would be a great piece to entertain your kids.

The colour and detailing for this piece below is lovely.
I have seen some cheaper ones with really bad quality printing from China.

And lastly, this beautiful fuchsia piece is what I wore! It comes with a matching bikini top!
And this was a custom made extra large size.

Well, a word of caution if you plan to order your mermaid tail from Shopee/Lazada/Taobao. First you need to understand your size. The ones sold there are generally smaller fit. So if you are a plus size girl like me, those generally won't fit. My mermaid sifu can advise and offer you some consultation on sizes too and she can help in making custom sizes mermaid tails for you through her supplier too.

I was grateful for her guidance and mermaid education today. I never knew all these things and nearly just wanted to just order my tail online. Jangan! Bazir nanti!

I really hope this blogpost on mermaiding help enlighten you mermaid wannabe out there.
