Light Up Your Home with Colour This Deepavali

All around the world, Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Light, is celebrated annually to honour the victory of light against darkness. The story of Deepavali dates back to Rama-chandra in the seventh century where he was believed to be the seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu. The celebration and importance of Deepavali was established when Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile. In the years of exile, Rama had fought through hardships and battles against demons and the demon king, Ravana. When the people were reunited with Rama, they lit up their homes to celebrate Rama’s victory over evil and freedom from darkness.

Another deity celebrated is Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, happiness and good fortune. It is a common belief that Lakshmi roams Earth and enters homes that are pure, clean and bright. To invite light and prosperity into their lives, those celebrating Deepavali prepare Kolam, which is a visual prayer and an aesthetically pleasing decoration made up of intricate geometric shapes.

Befitting its name, The Festival of Light is celebrated harmoniously among our Malaysian community – very often with gatherings and hearty feasts. However, in recent light of the pandemic and movement control orders, Deepavali celebrations may look a little different this year. As we are spending more time at home than ever before and adjusting to the new normal, perhaps it’s a good idea to celebrate Deepavali this year by giving our homes new colours inspired by Deepavali, Kolams, and the very colourful Sarees. We take a look at three colours that are common across these three things – green, red, and yellow.

AkzoNobel, the leading decorative paints and coatings company and maker of Dulux paint, houses over 2,000 colours in an array of finishes for different surfaces to cater to your every decorative need. Here are some ideas on how Dulux can bring Deepavali vibes to your home all year round.

Celebrate at home with colours inspired by Deepavali

Dulux Ambiance Pearl GloTM Marvelous Coral (07YR 21/415) and Brave Ground (Wright Stone 10YY 30/106)

Red in nature is an intense primary colour and is associated with fire, passion and is also seen as an auspicious colour during Deepavali. A shade of red for your bedroom would be perfect, particularly if it’s Marvelous Coral – a light brick red with a tint of pink that perfectly captures the brightness of Deepavali lights and decorations. This red paired with an earthy neutral colour will provide your bedroom with a harmonious blend of energy. To complement this colour, you could go with AkzoNobel’s Colour of the Year – Brave Ground (Wright Stone 10YY 30/106), which is a warm and grounding neutral shade that embraces change.

Dulux Ambiance Pearl GloTM Zodiac Night (70GG 13/323)

Green is a divine life-giving colour popularly seen in many Kolams and Sarees in various shades. Green hues are perfect for a room filled with natural light and placing fresh plants around the room will level up the soothing ambience. Zodiac Night is a deep and lively shade of green that can generate a peaceful and relaxing environment. Lighter shades of green like Windsurfer (10GY 74/325) contrast well to the deep hues of Zodiac Night. And to round it all up, you could add a breath of fresh air to your home office or living room by placing a snake plant in the room. Snake plants are known to be natural air purifiers that absorb toxins and produce oxygen, even at night.

Dulux Ambiance Pearl GloTM Monarch Gold (20YY 36/370) and Brave Ground (Wright Stone 10YY 30/106)

In Hinduism, yellow garments worn by deities like Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna, have influenced the colour to be associated with knowledge, happiness and peace. Design and aesthetic-wise, it is also a colour that can invigorate happiness from within and strategically brighten up a dark room. Keep the good spirits from Deepavali in your home all year round with a panel of Monarch Gold across an accent Brave Ground. The note of yellow across a neutral brown is a perfect contract that encapsulates a simple and elegant design for your bedroom or living room.

Making small changes in your environment can have significant impact to your wellbeing. This is us wishing you a safe and prosperous Deepavali from AkzoNobel. For more inspiration and tips, visit us at www.dulux.com.my/en/.
